At some point in our lives, most of us will go through a really tough patch.
Maybe it will be an illness — either your own or a family member’s.
Maybe it will be a mountain of debt.
Or maybe it will be an awful work situation that you struggle to get out of.
It might make you feel sad, alone, or overwhelmed and you might not know where to start to make things better.
Even though it might not feel like it at the time, there’s usually an end in sight. Eventually, things will start to turn around, and a weight will be lifted off your shoulders.
The good news is, sometimes there are changes you can make that will help ease the burden a little bit. Sometimes doing something for yourself can make a difference — whether that is indulging in a little self-care or investing in yourself to learn new skills.
Alisha went from struggling with a really hard family situation to taking charge of her life and finding a way to earn extra income from her cake making business while still leaving ample time to take care of her family.
Keep reading to hear more about Alisha’s story (and check out pics of some yummy looking cakes!).
Q: Hi, Alisha! Tell us a little about your background. What did your life look like before Work-At-Home School?
I was a wife and mom of three working a full-time job that I was content in, trying to balance a household with a spouse who was at his worst point in his battle with depression. I was lost, alone, and sick, not taking care of myself and knowing I needed to do more. I just did not know where to start.
Q: I’m so sorry you had to go through that. What action(s) did you take as a result of being in Work-At-Home School?
I found options that I would have never considered before. I learned to code. Then I tried my hand at virtual assisting and social media management. And I started a website design business and a cake business.
Q: Wow! It’s amazing how many different skills you builT up in a short amount of time. What was your favorite course or resource from Work-At-Home School and why?
Hahna Lotnick’s course Freelance Developer Jumpstart was great! She has such heart and is super down-to-earth. I took time to listen and review all the courses. Not so I could try my hand at everything, but because there was always a nugget of information that could be transferred into any type of business. Those nuggets helped me transform my business and my strategy.
Note from Caitlin: The courses included in Work-At-Home School may change from year to year. Work-At-Home School is closed for enrollment right now, but you can sign up here to get on the waitlist!
Q: That’s so true. You might not use every single thing in WAHS, but there will always be little nuggets of information that will apply to what you’re doing. What was the most challenging part of getting started?
The most challenging part was not knowing where to start first. There is so much information, it is overwhelming, and you get shiny object syndrome if you’re not careful. So I started with what topics interested me first and chipped away from there.
Q: That’s a good strategy! What is the most valuable thing you learned from taking Work-At-Home School?
The most valuable thing is knowing that you can do anything. As long as you provide value, become an expert at a skill, and then rock that shit, you’re a golden force of awesomeness.
Q: Love that! Providing value is what I’m all about. If you focus on solving other people’s problems, your own problems will be solved too. How long did it take you to find your first client? And how many clients do you have now?
The most amazing thing about the internet is that there is no shortage of people. It took me just a few weeks to find my first client.
Q: That’s awesome! How long did it take you to recoup the cost of the course?
It was within a month that I was able to see a return on my investment into the course.
In the few months that we had the website business, we grossed $5,500.
With regard to my cake business: In 2018, I grossed $5K in nine months, not knowing what I was doing and not taking an income. In 2019, I grossed $12,324.00, took 30% as income, and took a month off.
Here’s what some of AlishA’s happy clients have to say. The pictures speak a thousand words!
Q: Would you recommend Work-At-Home School? Is it worth the money?
I recommend it to anyone that will listen!!!
Q: Thank you so much! What does your life look like now?
Insane! I am still working full-time and running my cake business full-time. I just stepped down from my website design business to focus on cakes. My husband is getting the care he needs, and I am around for my kids more.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the WAHS community?
The Work-At-Home Summit started me on this path. Ignorance may be bliss, but I’d rather challenge myself and become a better me. WAHS gave me the starting point to forever kick ass!
Look at those amazing cakes! My mouth is watering here! I love that Alisha is enjoying the challenge and reaping the rewards of being her own boss. Even though she’s still super busy, her family’s needs are being taken care of. Sounds like she has her cake and she’s eating it too! 😉
